How Does Invisalign Work
Invisalign treatment has become an increasingly popular way to reinvent smiles. Invisalign is one of the leading clear aligner systems in the world and is a removable and cosmetic alternative to traditional metal braces. Many orthodontists and dentists become Invisalign-trained in order to provide patients with the smile of their dreams.
So, how does the Invisalign process work?
First, an initial consultation will be performed with your dental professional. During this visit the Invisalign process will be described to you in detail and your doctor will answer any questions you may have regarding treatment. Your smile will be evaluated, and photographs and x-rays will be taken of your teeth. Facial headshots from different angles will also be taken to aid in treatment planning. In addition, your teeth will be digitally scanned to gain an impression or mold of your jaws. This will allow your doctor to customize your treatment plan. Once shown your step-by-step smile transformation, your customized and FDA-approved Invisalign clear aligners will be created.
Once your aligners are made you will visit your doctor for your first fitting. At this appointment your doctor will confirm the fit of your aligners. They will inform you if your treatment requires the use of SmartForce® attachments, which may be added at this time. SmartForce® attachments are tiny discreet tooth-colored shapes that are temporarily bonded to your teeth to aid in tooth movement. The aligners fit snuggly around the attachments and apply a constant gentle pressure to align your teeth. In order to see proper results, aligners are designed to be worn for approximately 20 to 22 hours and should be removed only when eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. It is important to keep up with your regular oral hygiene routine throughout your Invisalign treatment. Brush after each meal before putting your aligners back in to help prevent food and dental plaque from becoming trapped between your teeth and the aligner. When removing your aligners, you should clean the trays by brushing them gently with room temperature water, soap, retainer cleaner, or an Invisalign Cleaning System.
You will be instructed on how often to change to a new set of aligners. Each set of aligners will gradually shift your teeth into their desired places. Your doctor will set up regular appointments to check your progress and give you additional sets of aligners. According to Invisalign, average treatment time is 12-18 months, however, this will vary on a case-to-case basis.
Once your Invisalign treatment is completed, your doctor will provide you with a retainer to maintain your beautiful new smile!
